Riddle me this...
The Sphinx asked as (s)he had many times before ""Which creature in the morning goes on four legs, at mid-day on two, and in the evening upon three, and the more legs it has, the weaker it be?"
Oedipus solved the riddle by answering "Man—who crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and then walks with a cane in old age." thus escaping the terrible fate that each had met before him.
The Sphinx countered 'Then tell me this...there are two sisters: one gives birth to the other and she, in turn, gives birth to the first."
Oedipus replied "Day and night"
Perplexed the Sphinx asked 'Tell me then sage, what is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?"
Smiling Oedipus replies "African or European?" the rest as they say...is history...
